The Parliament of the Republic of South Africa will host the 11th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) – a gathering of Speakers and Presiding Officers from G20 member countries – at the Arabella Hotel in Kleinmond, outside Cape Town, from 29 September to 3 October 2025.
The Summit will be held under the theme: Harnessing Parliamentary Diplomacy for the Realisation of Global Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability. The programme will be preceded by the 2nd P20 Meeting of Women Parliamentarians and the P20 Young Parliamentarians Conference, which will take place concurrently from 29 to 30 September 2025.
A Platform for Global Collaboration
The summit will serve as a platform to promote shared responsibility and historical accountability, while fostering new partnerships for Africa’s sustainable development and racial justice. The P20 will play a key role in strengthening existing collaborations between South Africa and other African nations – as well as countries worldwide – through the advancement of policy and legislative initiatives that positively influence the global agenda.
For parliaments across the African continent, this moment presents a valuable opportunity to align domestic legislative agendas with broader regional and international priorities. It encourages deeper engagement on economic cooperation, sustainable development and equality – enabling African parliaments to reinforce their role in championing policies that address the continent’s developmental needs.
South Africa’s G20 presidency opens a channel for African parliamentary representatives – including young parliamentarians and civil society – to contribute meaningfully to global economic discussions. This promotes the integration of African perspectives, concerns, and initiatives into G20 deliberations, ensuring a more inclusive and balanced global policy framework.
A Warm Welcome from Parliament’s Presiding Officers
The Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, and the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Thoko Didiza, extend a warm welcome to all delegates, guests and participants attending the P20 Summit, scheduled from 1 to 3 October 2025 in Cape Town, home to the iconic Table Mountain.
They said: “We take immense pride in hosting the first-ever P20 Summit on African soil, signifying a historic milestone and unique occasion to showcase the continent’s extraordinary potential, its people and economic prospects.”
They further highlighted that the G20 is a critical international platform for shaping policies and strategies to address both current and emerging global challenges. “Intensifying global warming, poverty and inequality coupled with the rising global debt levels, protectionism sentiments and artificial intelligence risks, all calls for a unified parliamentary action across the globe. Now more than ever, there is a necessity for collective action from parliamentarians to drive development and prosperity and to safeguard the future of humanity.”
