Harnessing Parliamentary Diplomacy for Realization of Global Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability

Reminder: Parliament to Host P20 Youth Parliament for Historic Youth-Led Policy Dialogue Ahead of G20 Summit

Parliament, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 – Parliament will convene a landmark P20 Youth Parliament sitting on Friday, 13 June 2025, in the Good Hope Chamber. This high-level session, held just three days before Youth Day, will bring together young Members of Parliament, provincial legislators, youth advocates, and ministers to shape a national youth development agenda. This agenda will directly inform South Africa’s priorities at the 2025 G20 and P20 Summit.

With youth unemployment at alarmingly high levels, the sitting will focus on youth economic participation and sustainable employment opportunities. It will provide a platform for young leaders to propose policy solutions and secure concrete commitments from the government.

Why it matters:

  • Youth exclusion is a crisis: Globally, individuals under 30 years comprise less than 3% of parliamentarians (according to the IPU Global Parliaments Report). Despite this, they are disproportionately affected by unemployment and climate risks. This session represents a crucial step toward integrating youth voices into policy-making.
  • Accountability in action: Ministers will present response plans addressing jobs, skills development and education. Parliament will track progress on commitments made through its oversight mechanisms.
  • G20 linkages: The outcomes of this sitting will contribute to South Africa’s G20 Presidency, ensuring that African youth priorities – ranging from digital inclusion to green jobs – are on the global agenda.

Who will attend:
The event will feature youth delegates, including MPs and provincial legislators under 40, representatives from the National Youth Development Agency, high school learners, ministers responsible for youth employment, education, and innovation, as well as representatives from youth civil society organisations with provincial and national reach.

This year, South Africa holds the G20 Presidency. In alignment with that, Parliament will hold the P20 Summit – a gathering of Speakers and Presiding Officers from G20 member countries. The P20 serves as the parliamentary dimension of the G20, aiming to strengthen global legislative collaboration on key development issues. The 2025 Youth Parliament is one of the key preparatory activities leading up to the P20 and G20 summits later this year.
